The Ashinaga Africa Initiative started in 2014 with ten students from ten countries in sub-Saharan Africa. It has since grown to support more than 200 students from 46 countries. One talented candidate is selected each year from each country through a rigorous selection process that examines academic performance, leadership, and awareness of social contribution. There are more than 3,000 applicants every year, with an admission rate of 2%.
2021 marks the seventh year since the inception of the initiative. We recruit candidates from 48 anglophone, francophone, and lusophone countries in sub-Saharan Africa who share similar values; to become changemakers. All AAI Scholars are committed to pay forward the support they have received. They do this by becoming the catalysts of change on the ground in their communities.
Identifying and selecting the right candidate is key to the success of the program. For this reason, we have developed a rigorous recruitment process in cooperation with embassies, partner NGOs, and local education experts from each country to ensure we choose the right candidates.
