Internship Program in Japan

Ashinaga Foundation’s Japan internship program is coordinated from our Tokyo headquarters and is open to applicants worldwide. Placements vary by cycle, with opportunities to support either the Ashinaga Africa Initiative or Ashinaga’s education support programs for Japan scholars. On every team, interns build transferable skills and gain firsthand experience of working within an international NGO.

Beyond desk work, interns based in Japan may also have the opportunity to participate in student-facing activities depending on their term – including bokin, our biannual street fundraising campaign, and tsudoi, our student camps.

The program runs two cycles per year on a part-time, flexible-hours schedule:

  • Spring–Summer: approximately mid-May to end-July (with optional extension to end-September)
  • Fall–Winter: approximately end-September to mid-December (with optional extension after winter break; extension will be from mid-January to early mid-March)

Each main term is 12 weeks, with an optional 8-week extension available depending on team needs and intern performance (20 weeks maximum).

Working style varies depending on where you are based during the internship: interns in the Tokyo metropolitan area work in a hybrid format; those based elsewhere in Japan work primarily remotely with some in-person opportunities; and international interns work fully remotely.

Internship Program in Uganda

Interns working with Ashinaga in Uganda have the unique opportunity to mentor and teach talented Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI) Scholars from across the African continent. These Scholars are ambitious high school graduates, selected by Ashinaga to receive financial support to study at top universities around the world.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE AAI

The AAI Scholars’ training begins with a “Preparation Period”, to strengthen their academic skills and work on their university applications. In addition, Scholars develop their leadership skills and engage in community services. Later in the preparation period, they focus on planning for the practical aspects of living and studying abroad in their destination countries. This preparation period is conducted in a hybrid format, both online and in-person.

Interns in Uganda play an integral role in the development of Scholars’ academic ability during the preparation period. Bridging the roles of teacher and mentor, interns support Scholars in various fields. This is an opportunity for open-minded and driven individuals to gain experience through planning lessons using innovative pedagogical teaching methods, while getting insights on the challenges and possibilities in education in sub-Saharan Africa. Apply for a chance to make a big impact on the lives of AAI Scholars, whilst learning more about yourself and gaining a wealth of international experience!
